Nestled in the enchanting city of Charlevoix, Michigan, the Thatch House emerges as a jewel among the famed Mushroom Houses designed by the visionary Earl Young. Born from the original stone walls set by Young in 1918, this house initially did not reflect his later iconic hobbit-home style. However, through a dramatic transformation, it now stands as a testament to the whimsical, fairytale architecture that characterizes Charlevoix's Mushroom Houses.
The Thatch House's design, which took Michael Seitz three years to finalize after an initial sketch on a napkin, features specialized timber work and a beautifully flowing roof crafted from the finest natural thatch hand-reaped in Europe. Its construction during one of the coldest winters, undertaken by a master thatcher, symbolizes a rebirth, aligning with the arrival of spring to breathe new life into this architectural marvel.
Earl Young, a self-taught architect whose work is synonymous with Charlevoix, grew up with a fascination for boulders, which he incorporated into his designs alongside rope mortars, snow-capped chimneys, and wavy cedar shake roofs. His architectural style is organic and unexpected, creating earthy houses that seem like natural extensions of the land. Young's dream was to build a fairy tale village of all stone houses, a vision partially realized through his enduring legacy in Boulder Park and beyond.
The Thatch House, with its unique charm and storybook magic, offers an immersive experience into the world of Earl Young's architectural genius, inviting visitors to explore its six bedrooms, multiple fireplaces, and modern amenities, all while enjoying breathtaking sunsets over Lake Michigan.
